2017 Sadie Gwin Blackburn Environmental Seminar

Jan 12, 2017
Brown Auditorium in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Houston, TX

Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, FAAR, president and CEO of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, will deliver the River Oaks Garden Club’s Annual Sadie Gwin Blackburn Environmental Seminar. Drawing heavily on the work of The Cultural Landscape Foundation with many of our collaborators, this lecture, entitled “Make Visible, Instill Value, and Engage the Public in Our Shared Landscape Heritage”, will highlight a diversity of resource types throughout Houston, Texas and the Nation, emphasizing stewardship strategies and opportunities for public engagement.

Topics to be addressed:

What is the foundational knowledge that informs stewardship/interpretation of our landscape legacy? How do we assign value and assess significance for landscapes like Hermann Park and Rienzi? How can we work (and communicate) holistically across multiple disciplines? How do we make a landscape’s layers of history, (a.k.a. “palimpsest”), at a cultural landscape like Memorial Park or Emancipation Park known and understood? Then, armed with this foundational knowledge, how can we tell these stories to the broadest possible public?

Contemporary Front yard

A pleasing front yard with a steel grey blue tiled walk way. Its contemporary and with the clean cut lines gives a very officious look. More suited for a person with a real professional outlook in life and with a corporate veneer. Definitely wont suit the more bohemian minded folks as a personality! This is one of my favourite ways of passing the time…. trying to actually be able to describe a person just by looking at the front yard or the landscaping in general. I have been amazed at some of my deductions! You try it too when you have time on your hands!

Wood Patio

This patio is almost all in wood to stunning effect. The fire feature and the extension of the roof are extraordinary. The steel blue colour of the exterior of the patio gives it a brilliant effect of the pool reflecting onto the exterior of the patio. The cane furniture gives it a further grunge look. The floor could have done with a darker polish. All in all, a spectacular patio… just perfect for your breakfast outside and even beeter for a cocktail evening!

Excellent article from Houzz

Whether it’s a manicured front lawn, stone-paved pathway or intricate landscape design, landscapes benefit from the same attention to detail that the interior of your home does. Well-executed landscaping ideas can upgrade your home’s entire aesthetic, and the right plants, flowers and shrubbery can greatly enhance your curb appeal by adding color, texture and even fragrance to your yard.

Before starting on your new landscape design, survey your area and make some notes; you cannot concretely consider certain landscape decorating ideas unless you identify what kind of climate you are living in, how much you are willing to spend and how much space you have to work with. Additionally, as you browse several landscape ideas and landscape pictures and make notes about the designs and landscapes that really jump out at you, keep in mind what level of ongoing maintenance is actually feasible.

If you love working with plants, a large rose or vegetable garden is the perfect use of land; if you live in a hot or dry area, consider drought-tolerant landscape ideas. If you have younger kids, consider what they would enjoy as well, such as a large grassy area or a playground, swing set or pool. Think about what your family would use the most, as well as what would help boost your resell value in the long run. Lastly, when it comes to landscapes, be sure to consider different front and backyard ideas, as they are separate entities that serve two very different purposes.

Brick and blue stone pavers

Somehow I am fascinated by brick pavers. They keep testing my creative limits and I am surprised by how adaptable these garden paths are to different materials. These brick and blue stone pavers form just the perfect materials for a grunge look against overgrown leafy sides. Contemporary

A beautiful, contemporary, clean landscaped corner with astonishing colors. I love the bunch of greens and the small water body and the clean cut lines which at the same time make it homely and earthy. Not our work but its definitely quite interesting!
